Residential IP
technologyAn IP address assigned to a real home internet connection, as opposed to a data centre server.
Explanation
Residential IP addresses are assigned by internet service providers (ISPs) to home broadband customers. Because they look like they belong to real households, streaming services have a much harder time detecting and blocking them compared to data centre IPs used by commercial VPNs. Some VPN and proxy services offer residential IP pools specifically to get around streaming service VPN detection. Streaming platforms are spending more on identifying and blocking residential IPs suspected of being part of proxy networks.
