Residential IP

technology

An IP address assigned to a real home internet connection, as opposed to a data centre server.

Explanation

Residential IP addresses are assigned by internet service providers (ISPs) to home broadband customers. Because they appear to belong to genuine households, streaming services find them much harder to detect and block than data centre IPs used by commercial VPNs. Some VPN and proxy services offer residential IP pools specifically to circumvent streaming service VPN detection. Streaming platforms increasingly invest in identifying and blocking residential IPs suspected of being part of proxy networks.
