Exclusive Distribution Rights
rightsA content deal that prevents any other platform from streaming the same title in a given territory.
Explanation
Exclusive distribution rights give a single platform the sole legal authority to stream a title in a specified territory during the contract period. Exclusivity is the most valuable — and most expensive — type of content deal. Disney+ holds exclusive streaming rights to Marvel and Star Wars content globally. Peacock holds exclusive US streaming rights to The Office. These exclusivity windows create the fragmentation that forces subscribers to maintain multiple services. Exclusive deals typically run 2–5 years before rights revert or are renegotiated. When exclusivity expires, content may move to a new platform, become available on multiple services, or return to the rights holder for a direct-to-consumer offering.
