Content ID is YouTube's proprietary copyright management system that automatically scans uploaded videos and compares them against a database of copyrighted audio and video submitted by rights holders. When a match is detected, rights holders can choose to block the content, monetize it (capturing the ad revenue), or track its viewership statistics. Content ID has processed billions of videos and is the primary mechanism through which YouTube manages the distribution of sports highlights, music, and film clips on the platform.
