How to Cancel Every Streaming Service (And How to Get a Refund)
Step-by-step cancellation instructions for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Peacock, and Paramount+. Includes refund policies, the pause option where available, and how to handle subscription billing disputes.
TL;DR
Netflix and Hulu can only be cancelled on the web, not in the mobile app. Disney+ and Max allow cancellation in-app. Amazon channels cancel through Amazon, not the streamer. Apple TV+ cancels through iOS Settings. Most services do not issue prorated refunds — you keep access until the billing period ends.
How to Cancel Netflix
Netflix cancellation is web-only — you cannot cancel through the Netflix iOS or Android app. This is an intentional design choice: Apple and Google take a 15-30% commission on subscriptions purchased through their app stores, so Netflix directs billing through its own website to avoid the fee. If you subscribed through Apple, the cancellation path is different.
Cancel Netflix (direct billing):
- Go to netflix.com in a browser and sign in.
- Click your profile icon in the top right, then select "Account."
- Under "Membership," click "Cancel Membership."
- Confirm cancellation on the next screen.
You keep access until the end of your current billing period. Netflix will show you a cancellation confirmation and the date your access ends.
Cancel Netflix (subscribed through Apple):
- On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
- Find Netflix and tap it.
- Tap "Cancel Subscription."
Pause option: Netflix offers a pause option (1-3 months) instead of full cancellation. During a pause, billing stops and your account, profile, and watchlist are preserved. Access the pause option from the same Account page, below the cancellation button. Pausing is the better choice if you plan to return within a few months — you avoid losing recommendations and watch history.
How to Cancel Hulu
Hulu, like Netflix, does not allow cancellation through its mobile app if you subscribed directly. Use the website or app depending on how you originally subscribed.
Cancel Hulu (direct billing):
- Go to hulu.com and sign in.
- Click your profile name in the top right, then "Account."
- Scroll to "Your Subscription" and click "Cancel."
- Follow the prompts — Hulu will offer discounts or a pause before confirming cancellation.
Cancel Hulu (subscribed through Disney Bundle): If you subscribed to Hulu through a Disney Bundle (Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+), cancelling Hulu cancels the entire bundle. Manage through disneyplus.com or the Disney+ app under account settings.
Pause option: Hulu offers a pause for 1-12 weeks. During the pause, you lose access but billing stops. Access the pause option during the cancellation flow — Hulu will offer it as an alternative before completing the cancellation.
Refund policy: Hulu does not issue prorated refunds for the unused portion of a billing period. You keep access until the billing cycle ends. If you were charged in error (e.g., after you believed you cancelled), contact Hulu support at help.hulu.com.
How to Cancel Disney+
Disney+ allows cancellation through both its app and the website, making it one of the simpler services to cancel.
Cancel Disney+ on the web:
- Go to disneyplus.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon and select "Account."
- Under "Subscription," select "Cancel Subscription."
- Confirm.
Cancel Disney+ in the app (iOS or Android):
- Open the Disney+ app and tap your profile icon.
- Go to "Account" > "Subscription."
- Tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm.
If you subscribed through Apple: Cancel through iOS Settings > your name > Subscriptions > Disney+.
If you subscribed through Google Play: Cancel through the Google Play app > Subscriptions > Disney+.
Disney+ does not currently offer a native pause option. If you want a temporary break, you have to cancel and resubscribe. Your watchlist and profile settings persist on the account even after cancellation, so resubscribing restores your history.
How to Cancel Max
Max (formerly HBO Max) allows cancellation through its app and website.
Cancel Max on the web:
- Go to max.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon and select "Settings."
- Go to "Subscription" and select "Cancel Plan."
- Confirm cancellation.
Cancel Max on iOS or Android:
- Open the Max app and tap your profile icon.
- Go to "Settings" > "Subscription" > "Cancel Plan."
If you subscribed through a third party (AT&T, Apple, Amazon Channels, Hulu add-on): you cannot cancel through Max directly. You must cancel through the original subscription source. AT&T subscribers cancel through their AT&T account. Amazon Channels subscribers cancel through Amazon (see below). Apple subscribers cancel through iOS Settings > Subscriptions.
Max does not offer a pause option. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
How to Cancel Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video is more complex to cancel because it can be accessed three ways: as part of a full Amazon Prime membership, as a standalone Prime Video subscription, or through Amazon Channels (individual add-on subscriptions to other services like Paramount+ or Max).
Cancel full Amazon Prime membership:
- Go to amazon.com and sign in.
- Go to "Account & Lists" > "Prime Membership."
- Click "Update, cancel, and more" under your membership status.
- Select "End Membership."
- Choose "End Now" or "End at Period End."
Cancel Prime Video standalone: Same path — it appears under the Prime Membership management page.
Cancel an Amazon Channel (e.g., Paramount+ through Amazon):
- Go to amazon.com > "Account & Lists" > "Memberships & Subscriptions."
- Find "Prime Video Channels."
- Find the channel you want to cancel and click "Cancel Channel."
Refund policy: Amazon sometimes issues partial refunds for Prime cancellation if you have not used significant Prime benefits (free shipping, Prime Video). The refund amount depends on usage and time remaining. Amazon calculates this automatically — you will see the refund amount before confirming.
How to Cancel Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is always billed through Apple, regardless of which device or app you used to subscribe. Cancellation is always through your Apple ID subscription management.
Cancel Apple TV+ on iPhone or iPad:
- Go to Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
- Tap "Apple TV+."
- Tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm.
Cancel Apple TV+ on Mac:
- Open the App Store.
- Click your name at the bottom left, then "Account Settings."
- Under "Subscriptions," click "Manage" and find Apple TV+.
- Click "Cancel Subscription."
Cancel Apple TV+ on Windows or Android:
- Go to tv.apple.com in a browser and sign in with your Apple ID.
- Click your profile icon > "Manage Subscriptions."
- Cancel Apple TV+.
Refund policy: Apple will issue a refund if you cancel within 14 days of being charged, under Apple's standard refund policy. Submit refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. This is more generous than most streaming services and is particularly useful if you forgot to cancel a free trial.
Peacock, Paramount+, and Others
Peacock: Cancel at peacocktv.com/account, or through Apple/Google if you subscribed through those stores. Peacock does not allow mobile app cancellation for direct subscribers. If you receive Peacock through Comcast Xfinity or another carrier bundle, contact your carrier to remove it.
Paramount+: Cancel at paramountplus.com > Account > Cancel Subscription. Also cancellable through Apple, Google, Amazon Channels, and Roku — use the same platform where you originally subscribed. Paramount+ occasionally offers pause options during the cancellation flow.
ESPN+: Cancel at espnplus.com > Account > Manage Subscription > Cancel Subscription. If you have the Disney Bundle (Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+), cancelling ESPN+ cancels the entire bundle. To keep Disney+ and Hulu without ESPN+, you need to switch to a plan that does not include ESPN+.
Crunchyroll: Cancel at crunchyroll.com > Account > Subscription > Cancel Membership. Note: Crunchyroll is owned by Sony (Funimation assets merged in), and the mobile apps do not support direct cancellation for web-billed accounts.
Starz, Showtime, MGM+: These services are frequently added as Amazon Channels or Apple TV Channels add-ons rather than direct subscriptions. Check your Amazon Channels list and Apple subscriptions list if you cannot find the cancel option on the service's own website.
Refunds and Billing Disputes
The default position for all major streaming services: no prorated refunds. When you cancel, you keep access until the end of the billing period you already paid for, and then the subscription ends. You are not refunded for unused days.
Exceptions and edge cases:
- Apple: Submit refund requests within 14 days at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple approves most first-time refund requests for accidental charges or forgotten trial cancellations.
- Amazon Prime: Amazon sometimes issues partial refunds based on usage. You will see the calculated refund before confirming cancellation.
- Unauthorized charges: If you were charged for a subscription you did not authorize or after you cancelled, contact the service's customer support with your cancellation confirmation. If that fails, dispute the charge with your credit card company — this is a legitimate chargeback reason.
- Free trial charges: If you were charged at the end of a free trial you forgot about, contact customer support. Most services will refund one accidental renewal as a goodwill gesture if you contact them promptly (within a few days of the charge).
How to avoid unwanted renewals: Set a calendar reminder for 3 days before any free trial ends. Turn off auto-renew the day you subscribe, not the day before it renews — most platforms allow you to disable auto-renew while keeping the current subscription active through the paid period.
