Streaming Token

technology

A short-lived authentication credential issued by a streaming service that authorizes playback of specific content.

Explanation

A streaming token is a cryptographic credential generated by a streaming platform's authentication server when a user initiates playback. It encodes information such as the user's account tier, geographic region, device, and the specific content being accessed. Streaming tokens have short expiry times (typically minutes to hours) to prevent sharing and enforce DRM. When a VPN changes a user's apparent location mid-session, the token may become invalid, causing playback errors.
